Smoke on the Water in Washington, NC

October 8, 2024

Smoke on the Water celebrates its annual barbecue festival’s 26th year in Washington on October 18th and 19th.

The weekend event kicks off on Friday with the pig parade downtown at 5pm. Event founder, Pam Anderson, says this year’s parade will be the largest one yet. "It will include people dressed as pigs, an actual pig, vehicles, floats, and things that have never been in the parade before."

After the parade Friday, The Embers will be performing at Festival Park.

Some of the best pig cookers in North Carolina will be competing for championship titles.

Anderson says this year’s competition includes the Whole Hog Barbecue Championship that is sanctioned by the NC Pork Council. "This is usually held at the state fair, but this year we are honored to be hosting it here.

This year we are also the host of the state championship of the Traditional Cooking contest [those that cook over wood and charcoal]."

Festival hours on Saturday are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and events include a beer garden, a car show, a special Kids Zone, train ride, arts and crafts vendors, and live music by the Patriots Band. The Kids Zone will feature activities for the kids, bounce houses, a train ride and more. All amusement rides are free of charge for the little ones to enjoy. A Motorcycle Ride by the Iron Order Motorcycle Club to Benefit the Humane Society takes off on Saturday morning as well.

Anderson says that Smoke on the Water has combined with local theatre group, Alternative Stage to bring a costume contest to the Turnage Theatre, which includes prizes for all age groups. "It’s a fun way to come out and win some money. There is also a special section called the Graveyard Emporium that has a Halloween theme, where there will be face painting and other children’s activities."

There will also be tailgate-takeout available at a drive up spot on the corner of Gladden & Main Streets for those that just want to pick up the best bbq and take it with them. Anderson says they offer this option every year and it’s a big hit.

"It’s a great time, but it’s also a wonderful way to give to the town for people in need. This event gives the proceeds to area nonprofits and supports the community. It’s a fun weekend but it’s also a service project."

If you’re looking for some weekend fun with live music, great food, family activities, a car show, arts & crafts vendors, and more, Smoke on the Water happens October 18th & 19th in little Washington.
